Benefits of Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate (SAP)

  • Stable and Bioavailable: Most stable form of Vitamin C, resistant to oxidation and easily penetrates the skin.
  • Antioxidant Protection: Neutralizes free radicals, reducing oxidative stress and slowing down the aging process.
  • Supports Collagen Formation: Aids in the conversion of proline and lysine to hydroxyproline and hydroxylysine, crucial for collagen and elastin stability.
  • Acne Treatment: Shows strong antimicrobial effects against acne, with a 5% lotion producing excellent results in 76.9% of patients without side effects.
  • Reduces Sebum Oxidation: Decreases sebum oxidation by up to 40%, addressing a key factor in acne development.
  • Effective Alternative: Demonstrated better efficacy than traditional acne treatments like benzoyl peroxide and adapalene.

The indications for Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate (SAP) typically include:

  • Anti-Aging: Reduces fine lines, wrinkles, and signs of sun damage, promoting a more youthful appearance.

  • Acne Treatment: Effective for managing acne due to its antimicrobial properties and ability to reduce sebum oxidation.

  • Hyperpigmentation: Helps to brighten skin and reduce dark spots and uneven skin tone.

  • Skin Protection: Provides antioxidant protection against environmental stressors like UV rays and pollution.

  • Collagen Support: Aids in collagen and elastin production, improving skin firmness and elasticity.

  • Skin Soothing: May help alleviate inflammation associated with conditions like eczema and rosacea.

These indications make SAP a versatile ingredient in skincare formulations targeting multiple skin concerns.

Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate (SAP) is a naturally occurring, water-soluble derivative of Vitamin C. As the most stable form of Vitamin C, it resists oxidation better than other derivatives like Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate (MAP), Ascorbyl Palmitate, and L-Ascorbic Acid.

As an antioxidant, SAP effectively reduces oxidative stress by neutralizing free radicals, slowing the aging process and the formation of fine lines and wrinkles. Its bioavailability is enhanced by the attached salt molecule, allowing it to penetrate the skin's lipid barrier more easily. Because SAP is well-absorbed, it is less likely to cause irritation compared to L-Ascorbic Acid.

Proline and Lysine are converted into hydroxyproline and hydroxylysine in the skin through a reaction facilitated by ascorbic acid. These molecules are crucial for the formation and stability of collagen and elastin.

Several studies have demonstrated the acne-fighting benefits of SAP. In an in vitro study, researchers found that a 1% concentration of SAP exhibited strong antimicrobial effects against acne for up to 8 hours. A separate study showed that a 5% SAP lotion used over 12 weeks yielded excellent results in 76.9% of patients, significantly outperforming many prescribed acne treatments and without side effects.

For decades, it has been recognized that lipid peroxidation (the oxidation of sebum) plays a major role in acne development. Research indicates that lipid peroxidation drives comedogenesis and inflammation. SAP has been shown to reduce sebum oxidation by up to 40%, addressing the oxidized by-products of human sebum that contribute to acne and skin aging. For instance, squalene peroxide can lead to clogged pores, inflammatory acne, and even wrinkles due to various oxidizing agents like ozone, UVA rays, cigarette smoke, natural skin yeasts, and environmental pollutants.

Additionally, clinical trials have shown that SAP is more effective than 5% benzoyl peroxide, 1% clindamycin phosphate, and 0.1% adapalene (Differin) in treating acne.
